Or is it sometimes just a really good sales job?
And how can you even tell?
Today I want to teach you about a neat little research trick called “statistical significance.”
Because it’s not what most people think it is.
I’ve read a lot of medical research papers in my time.
But I always read them with a great deal of caution and a ton of skepticism.
One challenge I see again and again is how research findings are interpreted — both by researchers and by the media.
And it usually revolves around one phrase:
“Statistically significant.”
Before you accept a headline based on that phrase, it’s important to understand what it actually means.
Here’s something that happens all the time.
Researchers publish a result and say it is statistically significant.
But when that research gets discussed in articles, news headlines, or interviews, something subtle happens.
The phrase quietly gets shortened.
Instead of saying:
“statistically significant”
people simply say:
“significant.”
And that tiny change makes the finding sound like it is:
But those things are not the same at all.
Statistical significance simply means this:
Researchers believe the difference they observed probably did not happen by random chance.
That’s it.
It does not mean the result is important in real life.
To see why, let’s look at a few examples.
Imagine a study with 20,000 people.
Half receive a treatment.
Half do not.
At the end of the study:
Because the study is so large, researchers can be confident the difference didn’t happen randomly.
So they say the result is statistically significant.
But from a patient’s perspective?
A 1% improvement is basically meaningless.
No one with a serious health condition would consider that life-changing.
The statistics may look impressive.
But the real-world impact is tiny.
Let’s imagine another study.
Researchers test a medication for diarrhea.
Participants rate their symptoms on a 10-point scale.
At the end of the trial:
Because the study is large enough, researchers conclude the result is statistically significant.
But ask yourself:
Would a 2-point improvement on a 10-point scale meaningfully change your life?
Maybe a little.
But it’s certainly not a cure.
And it’s only 1 point better than the control group.
Yet headlines may still say the treatment had “significant benefits.”
Now imagine the reverse situation.
A small study tests a treatment in 20 people with severe IBS.
At the end of the study:
That’s a huge difference.
But because the study is small, researchers can’t be completely certain the result wasn’t influenced by chance.
So technically they may say the result is not statistically significant.
But from a real-world perspective?
A 40% improvement could be extremely meaningful to patients.
So when you read a research study, the most important question isn’t:
Was the result statistically significant?
The real question is:
How much did people actually improve?
Did patients get better in a way that:
If the improvement is tiny, statistics don’t suddenly make it important.
In medicine we sometimes see treatments promoted based on statistical findings that look impressive on paper but don’t translate into meaningful results for patients.
At our clinic, we focus on something much simpler:
Do our patients actually get better?
And not just a little better.
A lot better.
That’s the standard that really matters.
