Are you constantly bloated, tired, or battling reflux—and nothing seems to help? What if I told you the problem probably isn’t too much stomach acid… but too little?

Let's talk about the 10 most common symptoms of low stomach acid, also called hypochlorhydria, and explain how it could be silently sabotaging your digestion, energy, skin, and immune system. This might be the missing link you’ve been looking for—let’s dive in.

Many people assume that they have too much stomach acid—especially if they experience heartburn or reflux—but the reality is, many of them actually have too little.

First let’s talk about what hypochlorhydria is and why low stomach acid can cause such a wide range of issues.

🔬 What Is Hypochlorhydria?

Hypochlorhydria is a condition where your stomach doesn’t produce enough hydrochloric acid (HCl)—which is the strong acid that we normally call stomach acid, and that your body needs to properly digest food, absorb many nutrients, and kill harmful bacteria.

Stomach acid is vital for:

• Breaking down proteins

• Activating digestive enzymes like pepsin

• Absorbing key nutrients like B12, iron, calcium, and magnesium

• Defending against pathogens, such as bacteria.

Without enough acid, food ferments instead of digesting, which can lead to gas, bloating, and even a bacterial or fungal overgrowth in the digestive system.

📋 Top 10 Common Symptoms Of Low Stomach Acid

1. Bloating After Meals

When stomach acid is low, food sits in your stomach longer, fermenting and producing gas. This can lead to bloating—especially in the upper abdomen.

2. Frequent Burping or Belching

That gas buildup often escapes as burps, sometimes within minutes of eating. If you’re burping a lot, especially after protein-heavy meals, low stomach acid is one possible reason.

3. Heartburn or Acid Reflux

Ironically, low stomach acid can cause reflux. Without enough acid, you may not trigger the lower esophageal sphincter to close properly, acid—even if minimal—can move up into the esophagus, causing heartburn.

So what do most people do? They take PPIs, medications that decrease acid production. That stops the heartburn but ironically makes low stomach acid even worse! So you’ve treated the symptom but haven’t addressed the cause yet.

4. Undigested Food in Stool

If you notice bits of undigested food in your stool regularly, your stomach may not be breaking down food properly due to low acid. Or you may not be breaking food down due to low enzyme production, which can be due to low acid production. Because remember, acid production then triggers many enzymes.

5. Nutrient Deficiencies

Low stomach acid impairs digestion of foods, which of course can cause nutrient deficiencies. But stomach acid is also directly related to the absorption of vitamin B12, iron, zinc, calcium, and magnesium, which means that it can cause deficiencies in these vitamins. This can lead to things like poor immune function and even muscle cramps.

6. Hair Thinning and Weak Nails

You need nutrients like biotin, iron, and protein for healthy hair and nails. Chronic hypochlorhydria can cause nails to become weak or brittle, and hair to be thin or even to fall out.

7. Chronic Fatigue or Brain Fog

Poor digestion = poor fuel. When your body can’t absorb nutrients efficiently, then your energy levels and cognitive function suffer.

8. Bad Breath (Halitosis)

Food that’s sitting undigested in your gut becomes a breeding ground for bacteria—many of which emit foul-smelling gases that lead to bad breath.

9. Frequent Infections or Illness

Stomach acid acts as a barrier to harmful bacteria and viruses. Low levels make it easier for the bad guys to get past the stomach and pass into the intestines, increasing your risk of illness, bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), fungal overgrowth (SIFO), and food poisoning.

10. Acne, Rosacea, or Skin Issues

Skin conditions often reflect digestive problems. Studies show a link between hypochlorhydria and inflammatory skin issues, especially rosacea.

🧠 Why These Symptoms Occur

The digestive cascade starts in the stomach. If you don’t produce enough acid:

• Proteins aren’t broken down effectively

• Enzymes aren’t activated properly

• Bacteria aren’t killed off

• Nutrients don’t get absorbed

This one disruption creates a domino effect that impacts your gut health, immune system, skin, energy, and more.

And because many of these symptoms occur in other conditions—like IBS, GERD, or even depression—hypochlorhydria is commonly misdiagnosed or overlooked.

💡 What Can You Do About It?

If this sounds like you, it’s time to dig deeper. Find a doctor who will help you to find and treat the root cause of your symptoms and not just treat the symptoms themselves, which often causes more problems than it solves.

You especially want someone who is an expert in finding and treating hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid), and if needed, can help you get off of PPIs and figure out why you have heartburn or reflux.
